Sept. 9: It is the turn of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) to show its solidarity in the drive against illegal migrants after All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).

Around 10,000 activists of the students’ body is likely to hold hands and stand together in the city on September 15 against the problem of illegal migration from Bangladesh in the state.

The Parishad will organise a unity chain in the city on September 15 in which people belonging to different communities are likely to take part.

The secretary of the students’ union, Monoj Baruah, told The Telegraph that they would seek permission of the Kamrup (metro) district administration to organise the unity chain from Dighalipukhuri to Guwahati Club Point.

“The basic purpose of organising the unity chain is to display that people irrespective of caste, creed, religion and language are united against the long-pending problem of illegal Bangladeshis. We want to show this unity again in Guwahati and garner more public support. People from Guwahati and its adjoining districts of Kamrup, Morigaon and Nalbari are likely to take part. We are expecting a gathering of at least 10,000 people in the unity march,” Baruah said.

The AJYCP is one of the important students’ groups, which has been spearheading public movement and demanding deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Assam, updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and protecting identity of the indigenous people of the state.

More than 20,000 supporters of AASU and Northeast Students’ Organisation on Thursday took to the streets of Guwahati demanding identification, deportation of the Bangladeshis in the state and updating the NRC with March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date and full implementation of the historic Assam Accord.

The AJYCP, too, has a similar agenda.

“Our movement against Bangladeshis is on for a long time and it will continue in the future too. We appeal to people from all spheres of society to take part in the unity chain and show that we are united against the threat of Bangladeshi issue and we will continue to fight in the future too,” Baruah said.

Members of the students’ group said students of different colleges in the city, too, are likely to take part in the unity chain.

“In the future, we will chalk out different programmes and continue to stage protests across the state demanding solution of the Bangladeshi issue. Unless strong steps are taken to solve this, Assam will continue to witness conflict like the one we are facing in lower Assam,” Baruah said.
