Imphal, May 12: United Veteran Sporting Association, Lilong Chajing, defeated Lairenjam Utlou Kodompokpi Sporting Association 4-0 in the 10th Challenge Cup Veterans Football Tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
The defeat left the Lairenjam Utlou Kodompokpi team in a tight spot in Group B, as they have only one more match left to play.
With today’s victory, the United Veteran team tallied six points and ensured a quarter-final berth for themselves.
The Chingoi Baruni Veteran Trust have chalked up three points in the group.
The first half was goalless, with United Veteran Sporting Association making a few futile attempts to score a goal.
In the second half, United Veteran Sporting Association opened up full throttle. Making amends for the earlier misdirected shots, N. Sagor Singh scored a fine goal in the 32nd minute to break the deadlock for United Veteran.
In the 44th minute, Th. Krishna Singh sent a pass near the Lairenjam goalmouth, giving Sagor his chance to score the second goal of the day.
Lairenjam continued their run but were unable to break the rival defence.
The United Veteran boys got their third goal in the 52nd minute. Ch. Roman made the first attempt but goalkeeper Ch. Bimol blocked it.
However, N. Muhindro collected the ball and hammered home the third goal. United Veteran came up with their fourth goal with H. Imo Singh anticipating a flank cross from K. Rajen Singhbang for the win today.
