Kokrajhar, July 23: Udalguri edged past defending champions Silchar by a solitary goal in a keenly-contested match to enter the final of the 32nd sub-junior inter-district football tournament at Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar.

Niku Basumatary netted the all-important goal in the 31st minute.

Though Silchar created some brilliant moves in the second half, poor co-ordination deprived them of an equaliser.

In Saturday’s final, Udalguri will meet the winner of tomorrow’s semi-final between hosts Gossaigaon and Bijni.

Chess team: The All-Assam Chess Association has named Jyotishman Bhagawati and Kabyanil Talukdar to represent the state in the under-11 boys’ category at the national championship to be held in Ahmedabad from August 23.

Bhaswati Chiring and Natasha Dutta have been selected in the under-13 girls’ category.

Mrinal Ranjan Gogoi has been named the team manager.

The teams have been selected on the basis of performance in the 32nd All-Assam Chess Championship in Duliajan.
