Silchar, May 8: Two persons were arrested from Assam’s Hailakandi district last night for their alleged involvement in the abducti on of a railway employee on May 1.
Biswajit Debnath was abducted on the night of May 1 while guarding the railway-level crossing at Salchapra village in Cachar district. On the basis of tip-offs, police traced the abductors to Katlicherra block in Hailakandi district.
District superintendent of police Brajendrjit Singh today said the army and Hailakandi police picked up two persons from a forest area under Ramnathpur police station on the district’s border with Mizoram last night.
Interrogation revealed that the duo, identified as Jainal Uddin Choudhury and Kutub Uddin Barbhuyan, was “directly or indirectly involved in the kidnapping”.
On the basis of inputs provided by the two, army and police commandos raided a hideout of the kidnappers in Katlicherra block last night.
The abductors had, however, deserted the hideout, tucked away in a jungle grove, by the time the security forces reached there.
Singh said more such raids would be conducted to trace Debnath and his abductors.
