Agartala, Nov. 30: The Tripura government is ready to accord a “befitting reception” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit tomorrow to inaugurate the 363.3MW second unit of the Palatana thermal power plant under Gomati district.
The first unit of the Rs 10,000 crore Palatana thermal plant was inaugurated on June 20 last year by President Pranab Mukherjee.
According to the official schedule, Modi will arrive here by air from Dimapur at 1pm and will be received chief minister Manik Sarkar and members of his cabinet.
Modi, accompanied by Sarkar, will directly reach Palatana by a chopper and address a gathering there at 2pm.
Apart from the chief minister, power minister Manik Dey, Union minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan, ONGC chairman-cum-managing director D.K. Sarraf, ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPC) CMD Satyendra Kumar Dubey and CPM MP from West Tripura Sankar Prasad Dutta will be on the dais.
Taufiq Ilahi Chowdhury, the adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister, his wife Asma Taufiq and minister of state for power and petroleum Nasrul Hamid will also attend the programme at Palatana.
“In view of the immense help rendered by the government of Bangladesh in transporting heavy equipment for Palatana across their country without charging any duty or tax, we have already decided to give 100MW of power to the Bangladesh government. It has also been cleared by the government,” a source in the ONGC said.
Security measures are in place across the state in view of Modi’s maiden visit to Tripura as Prime Minister.
Three companies of paramilitary forces and a group of Special Protection Group (SPG) will be on duty at the meeting site in Palatana.
Official sources said because of shortage of time, Modi will not be able to visit the state secretariat to hold a meeting with the council of ministers.
But the chief minister, who spoke at the two-day DG and IG-level officers meet yesterday in Guwahati, called for development of infrastructure across the region and connecting all state capitals by a single four-lane highway.
