Agartala, March 5: The Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT), which had merged with the Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS) in February 2002 to form the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), broke away from the outfit to revive the disbanded IPFT yesterday.

The Front is demanding a separate state for tribals living in the areas under the Autonomous District Council (ADC) under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Narendra Chandra Debbarma, the former director of the All-India radio station and chief of INPT’s advisory council, has been named the president of the revived party.

A 73-member state committee has also been formed with members including Harinath Debbarma, Mulukchand Debbarma, Budhu Debbarma and others. The president of the IPFT, Narendra Chandra Debbarma has sought an electoral alliance with the Congress.“As a regional party we feel the need for an alliance with the Congress and will contact state Congress leaders for a long-term alliance,” he said.

INPT general secretary and former MLA Rabindra Debbarma said it would break up soon.
