Agartala, April 19: Facing mounting pressure from the Election Commission to come out with error-free electoral rolls, the Tripura election commission has landed in a soup with more than 65,000 voters possessing two sets of identity cards.

In an effort to crack down on electoral fraud, the officers engaged in the ongoing intensive revision of electoral rolls are finding it difficult to identify the the glitches and confiscating the “extra” cards.

Disclosing this, sources in the electoral department here said officials had started door-to-door visits to find out the “double card carriers,” but this had not yielded the desired result.

Chief electoral officer G.S.G. Ayengar said a special software sent by the Election Commission would be used to identify the culprits.

“We have already eliminated the names of 84,000 fake voters. More than 70,000 voters have their names in two or more constituencies. The problem is being sorted out.”

Reacting sharply to the statements made by election officials, leader of the Opposition Ratanlal Nath said pro-CPM employees and officials of the election department were “responsible for the whole mess.”

He alleged they had included more than 1.79 lakh names of fake voters, including those of minors and Bangladeshi citizens in the electoral rolls after the 2003 Assembly elections.
