Guwahati: The Tour Operators' Association of Assam will organise Destination Dima Hasao - Innovation, Partnerships and Sharing, a conclave, in Haflong on Friday to discuss the potential of tourism in Dima Hasao district, economic opportunities for the local communities and their role in advancing sustainable tourism development.
The organisers feel that Haflong is the only hill station in Assam that can be developed for sustainable tourism.
Development of a tourist circuit, comprising places like Jatinga, Umrangso and Panimura waterfall, is in the pipeline.
The association will also hold its 8th annual general meeting in Haflong, the headquarters of the hill district, to promote Dima Hasao as a viable tourist destination.
The president of the association, Sachin Goswami, said, "Haflong is the only hill station in Assam but the place has not been developed to its potential. Dima Hasao has several waterfalls. Jatinga and Umrangso are famous among birdwatchers. Amur falcons, which migrate to the region from Siberia in winter, have started coming to Umrangso."
He said a camping site for birdwatching and trekking could be developed in the almost virgin hilly trails in the area.
"Dima Hasao has a unique cuisine and wine. There are a few homestay options in the district but the number has to be increased. Connectivity is no problem as the roads are good and train services from Badarpur are also slated to start soon," he added.
Foreign tourist arrivals in India are expected to increase from nine per cent to 12 per cent this year and Assam hopes to get a share of that.
