Top seeds bite dust - Two major upsets on girls' courts on third day

Guwahati, July 17: The girls’ under-16 event in the OIL-AITA Super Series Tennis Championship witnessed two major upsets on the third day today. Unseeded Mehak Jain of Gujarat ousted fifth seed Rutvi Shah, also of Gujarat, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 and unseeded Harsimran Kaur of Haryana shocked fourth seed Prinkle Singh of Jammu and Kashmir 6-4, 6-2 in two pre-quarterfinal matches at the All Assam Tennis Association complex here.

In the girls’ under-12 courts, another upset took place when fifth seed Bengal girl Ishika Gupta defeated fourth seed Rachana Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to book a semi-final berth.

In yet another upset of the day, girls’ under-12 second seed Sai Y. Deedepeya of Andhra Pradesh lost against sixth seed Anand D. Mudaliar of Andhra Pradesh who won 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-4 to make it to the semi-finals.

Prinkle Singh of Jammu and Kashmir and Mahek Jain of Gujarat also booked semi-final berths in the same age group. While Prinkle prevailed over Kiran Kal Kal of Delhi 6-1, 6-1, Mahek got the better of Haryana girl Shreya Gulia 6-1, 6-4. In the boys’ under-12 age group, B. Rithwik Choudhury of Andhra Pradesh, Javia Dev of Gujarat, Sundar Arvind of Karnataka and Mahesh Mahapatra of Odisha entered the semi-finals. Rithwik got the better of Adarsh N. Tippabhatla 6-2, 6-3 in an all-Andhra quarter-final, Javia tamed Harshal Rukhaiyar of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-0, Sundar overcame tough competition against Assam boy Anurag Buragohain for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win and Mahesh defeated Kyle Cummings of Maharashtra 6-2, 6-3.

Ranking TT: The second day of the Don Bosco Alumni-organised 5th All Assam Open Ranking TT championship saw several upsets in the dub-junior and cadet events pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals at the Don Bosco School’s Nihal Singh Thakur Indoor TT hall here on Wednesday. Sports Authority of India regional centre director Meena Borah on Tuesday inaugurated the tournament where total of 237 paddlers, include 24 ranked players, will view for the honours.
