Gogoi plea for BSNL cell service

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has requested Union communications minister Arun Shourie to start BSNL mobile service in the state as soon as possible. This was stated by Bhagaban Lahkar, press adviser to the chief minister, on the occasion of 35th World Telecommunications Day at the Institution of Engineers. He stressed the importance of telecommunication in a state where 90 per cent of the population live in rural areas.

Bamboo centre

Assam forest minister Pradyut Bordoloi has said that plans are under way to set up a bamboo research centre in Guwahati. He said industrial exploitation of bamboo in the region has been mostly in the paper manufacturing segment and the two paper mills in Assam are doing well.

Police silent

Meghalaya police have refused to confirm reports of the arrest of Ulfa’s explosives expert and commander of its Enigma squad, Lal Singh from Tura on Saturday. Lal Singh, alias Alman Singh alias Amar Singh, was reportedly arrested along with two tribal women activists working as “couriers” for the Ulfa by Assam police. Meghalaya director-general of police L. Sailo, too, said he had no information on the arrest.

Technology MoU

A memorandum of understanding between the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute, Bangalore, and the director, Employment and Craftsmen Training Institute, Guwahati will be signed soon. Official sources said that this would help in building technical capacity in the Northeast and fulfil a long-standing need of the region.

Ransacked

Two groups of miscreants, reportedly owing allegiance to the ruling CPM, on Saturday ransacked the offices of two local dailies in Dhaleshwar area of Agartala. The two dailies had recently criticised school education minister Anil Sarkar through news items and stories published over the past several days.

Curfew relaxed

Curfew was relaxed in the North Cachar Hills district on Sunday for eight hours from 8 am, as the situation was “under control”. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the district as people came out in large numbers to purchase essentials during the curfew relaxation period, police said.Curfew was imposed in the district after Narmendu, son of Assam minister, G.C. Langthasa, was killed recently.
