Tezpur, Aug. 5: Vice-chancellor of Tezpur Central University P.C. Deka, against whom an FIR has been lodged by the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) for alleged financial indiscretion, left for Guwahati today.
Deka told mediapersons last night that the FIR was the result of “a misunderstanding”. He said he would clarify it with Governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh, who is also the chancellor of the university.
Sources said Deka would probably meet the governor in Guwahati and also decide on the next course of action.
The police team from Jorh-at, which will be investigating the case, is expected to reach Tezpur on Monday, since Saturdays are university holidays.
The AAU had filed an FIR at Jorhat police station against Deka on charges of opening a bank account in the AAU’s name without taking permission from the university authorities.
Deka had opened an account with the Jorhat branch of United Bank of India while he was dean of AAU from 1999 to 2004.
Sources said Deka had opened the account to deposit funds given by different agencies for research matters and other works. The AAU came to know about the account last November and referred the matter to the governor.
Sources added that Raj Bhavan had asked AAU to file a complaint against Deka early this week.
