Guwahati, Dec. 24: Two journalists from The Telegraph?s Guwahati bureau were among the 35 people conferred the Lauhopurush Premoda Kanta Sarma awards this evening for their contributions in the fields of culture, sports, journalism and education.
The Telegraph?s principal correspondent, Umanand Jaiswal, won an award for journalism, while Imtiaz Ahmed, was named the best sport journalist.
The awards were conferred by several sports and socio-cultural organisations ? Assam Sports Association, Assam Silpi Sanmilanee, Assam Socio-cultural Association, Assam Sports and Cultural Festival organising committee and Lauhapurush P.K. Sarma Smriti Rakhya Samiti.
Star News was named the best national-level news channel. Several eminent personalities ? Monoranjan Banerjee (sports), Biseswar Hazarika (education), Lakhyahira Das (art and culture) and Lila Gogoi (sports) ? were conferred lifetime achievement awards in their respective fields.
Reba Poddar (football), Ghanshyam Baruah (cricket organiser), Dilip Kumar Kakati (education), Bafaz Ahmed (social work), Mukul Hazarika (social work), Himeswari Hazarika (social work) and H.P. Chaliha (administration) were felicitated on the occasion.
