Shillong, May 5: A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced in the Lok Sabha that site clearance had been given for uranium mining at Domiasiat, the state government decided to do its bit to create a consensus on the issue.

For the first time since the controversy began over the proposal to mine uranium at Domiasiat and Wahkaji, the Meghalaya government today invited top scientists and experts from the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) and the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre to present their findings on the ?benefits of uranium mining,? before legislators, members of district councils, senior government officials representing different departments as well members of non-governmental organisations.

Though the meeting, which was held at the main secretariat building here, remained inconclusive on whether mining should be allowed or not, chief minister D.D. Lapang appeared happy with the outcome.

?We have not taken any decision, but we tried to seek everyone?s opinion, which has been our stand. We listened to the presentations made by the UCIL and the BARC scientists,? said Lapang.

Sources in UCIL said the meeting was, ?a fruitful one?. ?The government asked us to come and give presentations,? a senior scientist of the UCIL said, hinting that any decision on mining of uranium in Domiasiat would depend heavily on today?s meeting.

UCIL chairman R. Gupta later told reporters that the meeting was aimed at ?removing apprehensions,? about health hazards and other myths connected to uranium mining.
