Dibrugarh, June 26: The All Assam Tea Tribe Students Association today gave Dispur 15 days to produce a ?progress report? on how far chief minister Tarun Gogoi?s pre-poll promises have been fulfilled.
The central executive committee of the union set the deadline following a marathon meeting at Sonari in Sivasagar district last night.
During a discussion with union leaders of February 28, Gogoi had promised to fulfil several of their demands. These included appointing 80 youths of the community as high school teachers and depositing the state government?s share in the provident fund accounts of workers of Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL) gardens.
Now that nearly four months have passed since the promises were made, ?the community wants to know what action has been taken by chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his government after coming to power for the second time in a row?, union general secretary Padma Luchon Das said over telephone.
?The chief minister had made certain promises: he had pledged to clear pending arrears to the provident fund accounts of the labourers of ATCL gardens, appoint 80 teachers from the tea community in high schools in the areas where tea gardens are located, revamp the Assam Tea Employees? Welfare Board and implement adequate healthcare measures in tea garden areas. Now that almost four months have passed, we want to know what measures have been initiated in this regard,? Das said.
The general secretary of the influential organisation of tea tribes also warned the Congress and the state government that it would be compelled to resort to an agitation if the government failed to solve the problems of the 70-lakh-strong community.
The union has also levelled allegations that the state health department has been a mute spectator to the malaria menace, which recently assumed epidemic proportions in the state and caused a large number of fatalities.
?We will teach the Congress a lesson if it fails to work in accordance with its pre-poll promises. The panchayat elections are not very far off,? the leader warned.
The influential tea students? organisation also alleged that gross irregularities have occurred while providing quota seats to students from the tea community in the three medical colleges and urged the government to look into the matter.
The association has also demanded that a sum of Rs 50 crore be earmarked for the tea tribes? development department, which was created by the last government.
