Guwahati, July 2: Unseeded Suraj Dey annexed the title in the All-Guwahati Children Chess Championship, organised by Akshayam, that concluded at the Bhabendranath Saikia Children Welfare Trust here today.
Dey finally shocked Ravikant Tiwari, who was leading the tally till the last round, in the final round of the seven-round Swiss League tournament today to be tied with Debanga K. Bhattacharyya on six points each.
However, Dey was named the champion on the basis of better tiebreak scores.
Tiwari, who upset top two seeds on the first two days, was in third position.
Top seed Kaustav K. Das finished fifth with 5.5 points and second seed Natasha Dutta languished in the 10th place with only five points.
Fide-rated players Mohit Jain and Trinabh Chokhani also tallied 5.5 points each and were placed fourth and sixth respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.
Nitish Das, Bishal Patowary and Ankit Kumar Sharma scored five points per head to be placed seventh to ninth positions respectively on the basis of their tiebreak scores.
Fide-rating: Lakshyadeep Malakar of Gauhati Town Club Chess Foundation has been awarded international rating by the World Chess Federation (Fide) in its July rating list published today.
Malakar, who is being trained by Biswajit Bharadwaj and Nandan Buragohain at GTC Chess Foundation, achieved an ELO of 1,432 in the 1st CCF Fide Rating Chess Tournament 2011 in December and WBCA Fide Rating Open Tournament 2012 in May.
