Kokrajhar, April 13: A school and a police outpost were damaged in thunderstorms and heavy showers which lashed several parts of northern Chirang district last evening, damaging houses, uprooting tress, electric and telephone poles.

Runikhata border police outpost was damaged when an uprooted tree crashed on its roof. The tin roof of Runikhata Girls ME School was also blown away in the storm.

Over 20 villages in the area, including Pub-Salbari, Kanthalbari, Bhurpar, Modati, Thaikajhora, Madhya Runikhata, Paschim Salbari, Uttar Runikhata, Kunguri and Bhangabasti were affected by the storm. No losses of lives were, however, reported. “Several houses were damaged, with tin roofs being blown away. Trees were uprooted in many parts,” a police official in Runikhata said. The actual loss is yet to be ascertained.
