Guwahati, Aug. 30: The Assam unit of SFI today announced a state-wide strike on September 2 by all the schools opposing Dispur's move to allow 50 state-run schools to migrate to the CBSE.
"If the state-run schools migrate to the CBSE, the students will have to follow the national syllabus, which has little mention of Assam in their subjects. The students will forget their own culture, tradition and history. Instead, the state government should reform the syllabus and can adopt CBSE pattern of scoring or marking, retaining the state syllabus," the joint secretary of the Assam unit of SFI, Pratul Barman, told the media here today.
"The strike will be attended by all the members throughout the state and even after that, if the state government does not pay heed to our protest, it will take a bigger shape," Barman said.
The students' organisation has also put forth three other demands that include admission to around 1.17 lakh students of Assam applying for higher secondary and graduations, more teachers for every school and college lacking teachers and 70 per cent concession on travel fare for students.
"The government should open more colleges in proportion to students passing out each year. The state-run sch-ools lack more than 500 subject teachers. So these vacancies need to be filled up. As the cost of conveyance has shot up in Guwahati, we demand 70 per cent travel concession for students," Barman said.
