Dibrugarh, July 6: It was a lucky escape for Union minister for youth affairs and sports Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharjya and many other heavyweights of the party today.

The stage they stood on to address the youths at the Yuva Sanmilan in Chaulkhowa in Dibrugarh district today suddenly caved in, bringing them down with it. They escaped with minor injuries.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) had organised the youth meet at Chalkhowa playground.

The BJP has been organising such rallies to motivate youths of the region.

Before the stage collapsed, Sonowal urged the young generation to come forward and work hard for the development of the country. "Youths are the future of our country so we should encourage the young generation to work tirelessly for the development of society. They are the strength of a country and if they want they can bring about a new revolution in the political system of Assam." Sonowal said today's meeting would give a new direction to the youth of Assam.

Siddhartha Bhattacharjya lambasted the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government. "The Congress has indulged in rampant corruption and misgovernance and have been playing vote-bank politics. Like Anjan Dutta we never predict the seats, but this time we are very positive that we will do better," he said.

Anurag Thakur, national president of BJYM and general secretary of BCCI, said, "We have successfully enrolled 25 lakh members into the BJP in Assam under the able leadership of Siddhartha Bhattacharjya. We have to do a lot of work if we want to see BJP in Dispur. The Congress has failed to fulfil the promises it made to the people of Assam before the elections."

"There is much scope in the tourism sector, but the Congress government has not done anything to develop it. The unemployment problem in Assam has been rising. If we work with dedication, nobody can stop us from coming to power in Assam."

BJYM state president Diplu Ranjan Sharma said, "The Congress has been busy in syndicate raj and rampant corruption. We will come to power in the next Assembly election and for that we have to work hard."
