Squash meet in Guwahati

The Assam Squash Rackets Association will host the All India Brahma-putra National Squash Championship, a three-star ranking tournament of the Squash Rackets Federation of India, at the RG Baruah Sports Complex squash courts here from November 16 to 19.

Guwahati: The Assam Squash Rackets Association will host the All India Brahma-putra National Squash Championship, a three-star ranking tournament of the Squash Rackets Federation of India, at the RG Baruah Sports Complex squash courts here from November 16 to 19.

Over 155 players from across the country, including Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and the Services, will participate in the tournament in the junior and senior categories. Assam will be represented by 47 players. About 20 technical officials will officiate in the tournament.

The events will be held in under-11, 13, 15 and 17 age group for boys and girls, men and women. Haryana player Ravi Dikshit, who is ranked fifth in the country, will be the top seed in the men's court while Delhi girl Riya Sishodia will be the top seed in the women's draw.

ASRA president Shiladitya Dev said, "This is an open prize money tournament with a purse of Rs 4 lakh up for grabs. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the tournament."

Attributing the development of squash in Assam to the 12th South Asian Games, held here last year, Dev said, "Squash came to Assam in 2007 during the 33rd National Games but it has developed over the past one-and-a-half years with the creation of the squash complex here for the South Asian Games."
