Tura, March 8: Missionary and social worker Sr Gaudalape was felicitated today on International Women's Day programme at Dikki Bandi stadium for her contribution to the Garo hills for the past 66 years.
More than 2,000 women attended the celebration, which was attended by West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi and Bishop of Tura Rev. Andrew R. Marak.
Addressing the event, Bakshi acknowledged the contribution of women towards the progress of society and for improving the economic standard of living of the people in the region by associating themselves with different entrepreneur activities.
Highlighting women's rights and empowerment, he said in spite of being a matrilineal state there was a need for introspection in view of the rising incidents of crime against women and children.
He urged the women to be bold and bring about social change by building confidence to report such crimes.
Bakshi inaugurated stalls put up at the venue by different self-help groups from the five districts of the Garo hills exhibiting local products ranging from vegetables, fruits, handicraft and handloom products.
Awards for best PHC in-charge, best ASHAs, best female staff, all from Bakdil-run public health centres, best villages for utilising health services, best SHG animator, best women doctors for their committed service were given during the programme.
Different schools and self-help groups presented dances and skits at the event.
