Hailakandi, June 2: The District Sports Association (DSA) of Silchar has claimed that the newly-developed Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium is “ready to hold international cricket” following the installation of floodlights last month.

DSA secretary Babul Hore said the district body has proposed to officially inaugurate the floodlights by hosting a One-Day International match. The floodlights were installed by Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (Bhel) at a cost of Rs 5 crore.

Hore said Union minister and chief patron of the DSA, Santosh Mohan Dev, has requested BCCI president Sharad Pawar to allot an ODI match in Silchar as the stadium is now comparable to other international venues in the country.

Local cricketer Tanmoy Bhattacharya said he was impressed with the floodlights. A one-day women’s international cricket match between India and England has already been hosted at this stadium.

Although Silchar lacks adequate infrastructure, Dev has initiated talks with leading hotel groups to open at least two five-star hotels here.
