Imphal, March 1: BJP national president Amit Shah today promised to make Manipur a "model state" if the party is voted to power in the Assembly election.
Shah has been campaigning for the BJP, which is fielding candidates in all the 60 Assembly seats, since yesterday and has addressed four election rallies in the valley and the hills. He addressed two rallies today, the first in Ukhrul district and then at Yumnam Leikai here today.
In a last-minute effort to win votes in the 38 Assembly constituencies that go to polls on March 4, he also campaigned house to house at Chingmeirong, which falls under Wankhei constituency, here today along with state election in-charge Prakash Javadekar. The campaign was undertaken in between the two rallies.
This is the first time in Manipur's election history that any national party leader has campaigned house to house. The BJP team went to nearly a hundred houses, campaigning for BJP candidate Yumkham Erabot Singh, a former Congress minister.
"Install a BJP government in Manipur and we will develop Manipur into a model state for the country in five years' time," Shah told the rally at Yumnam Leikai.
He said Manipur has a huge potential to become a model state, be it agriculture, tourism or other sectors.
"First, Manipur can become a state where agricultural products are hundred per cent organic. A farmer who earns Rs 1 can earn Rs 20 when Manipur becomes an organic state," he said, adding that Manipur has many scenic places in the hills and valley with vast tracts of greenery. If the huge potential is tapped, "the state can become a better tourist destination than Switzerland".
"There will not be any encounter between the security forces and militants. There will not be any bandh or blockade in the state. We will lift the ongoing blockade (imposed by the United Naga Council) within 24 hours of the BJP forming the government," Shah promised.
He also promised a job for every house when the BJP comes to power, training for youths in the field of information technology to create jobs opportunities for them and setting up of the proposed national sports university in one year.
Alleging that the Okram Ibobi Singh government did not do anything in the past 15 years besides taking commissions, the BJP president said all cases of corruption would be probed and the guilty jailed.
BJP office vandalised: As the BJP president was addressing the rally at Yumnam Leikai, volunteers of Kangleipak Students Association (KSA) went on the rampage at the BJP head-office here. About 50 students arrived at the office around 3pm to talk to BJP leaders about the 1,528 cases of fake encounter killings, which is pending in the Supreme Court.
Eyewitnesses said when the students found the gate locked, they became angry. Despite the presence of security guards, the students broke the iron-gate and rushed inside. When they found that no BJP leader was present in the office, they went on the rampage, damaging furniture and breaking window panes.
