Sentry at CM's home kills self

April 20: A police constable on sentry duty at chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s Koindhara residence killed himself this evening.

The constable was identifi-ed as 30-year-old Kishore Med-hi. He was constable number 273 of the 10th Assam Police battalion, based in Kahilipara.

Senior police and civil officials have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Gogoi was not in his residence when the incident occurred. He is in New Delhi since yesterday.

Additional superintendent of police (city) Rajen Singh said Medhi shot himself with his service rifle while he was on sentry duty at the first post near the main entrance to the chief minister’s residence at around 4.30 pm today.

His face was smashed beyond recognition as the bullet, fired from his self-loading rifle, hit the left side of his head at point blank range. He died instantly.

Medhi, who was from Barpeta district, was unmarried. The reason for the suicide was not known.
