Guwahati, April 16: Seeds had a smooth sail into the second round on the inaugural day of the eighth Kaliyani Open Tennis Tournament, hosted at Numaligarh Refinery Ltd township in Golaghat district of Upper Assam, that got under way today.
Top seed Rituraj Gogoi eased past unseeded Rupjyoti Sarma 6-1, third seed Shivam Goswami blanked out Anurag P. Hazarika 6-0 while fifth seed Satyam Bora defeated Dibyajyoti Bora 6-3 in the single-setter first round encounters of the under-18 boys' event.
Similarly, in the under-14 boys' first round, top seed Kritanta Sarma humbled Niraz Poddar 6-0, Amar Jyoti Kalita blanked out Rokovozo Nagi 6-0, Arunesh Bora got the better of Meranhu Kaurinta 6-2 and Bastab Buragohain defeated Aranyam Baruah 6-1.
In the under-12 boys' singles first round, Jonak Bora humiliated Kabir Bhuyan 6-0, Bitupan Hazarika tamed Siddharth Kothari 6-0, Nishinabh Bora overcame Chundikung Kaurinta 6-4 and Antariksh Tamuly defeated Deavaroon Bora 6-4.
NRL director (finance) S.K. Barua inaugurated the championship. Altogether 160 players from Assam, Nagaland and Mizoram are participating in the meet.
The events held at the annual meet include boys' under-12, 14, 18 singles, girls' under-14 and 18 singles, men's and women's doubles. The tournament carries total cash scholarship of Rs 1. 25 lakh.
T20 cricket
Hosts City Cricket Coaching Centre (Red) will lock horns with Chandmari Sports Club in the inaugural match of the second Golap Hazarika and Arati Hazarika T20 prize-money cricket tournament at Judges Field here tomorrow. In another match of the day, City Cricket Coaching Centre (Blue) will clash with Youth Cricket Club at the same venue tomorrow.
