Agartala: The Opposition Congress on Friday alleged that the BJP-Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) government had withdrawn the personal security guards of its leaders, which was hampering their movement and hindering the party's organisational work in the state.
Tripura PCC president Birajit Sinha said, "The government has withdrawn my and ex-MLA Gopal Roy's security guards. It has become difficult for us to move across the state for political and organisational work."
He alleged that a group of goons allegedly sponsored by the BJP had attempted to attack him to prevent him from joining a party rally at Halahali in Dhalai district, about 93km from here, on Wednesday.
"We will not keep mum. At least 5,000 Congress activists will gherao the office of the director-general of police unless our personal security is restored," he said.
Congress vice-president Tapas Dey said Tripura BJP president Pratima Bhowmick has huge security but her Congress counterpart, Sinha, also a former minister, was not getting personal security guards.
"This is political discrimination," he alleged.
Sinha warned that if any Congress leader was murdered or faced a murderous attempt, the BJP government would be responsible for it.
