Guwahati, May 22: As many as 47 militants belonging to the proscribed Ulfa and NDFB surrendered to the army at Tamulpur in Nalbari district of Assam today.
Today’s surrender was the second such ceremony in the state this month. Earlier in the month, 10 NDFB militants had surrendered to the Assam Rifles in Tezpur.
Among those who laid down their arms today, 20 belonged to the Ulfa and 25 to the NDFB while two belonged to the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (Multa).
The militants surrendered with 42 assorted weapons including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, .303 rifles, one .22 mm pistol and one single-barrel rifle. In addition, AK-47 magazines, detonators, Chinese grenades and a Motorola radio set were also handed over to the army.
Recruitment drive
The Assam Rifles will hold a seven-day recruitment rally for Meghalaya in Jowai.
The recruitment rally, to be held at the local stadium from Tuesday, is for 150 vacancies, including 50 vacancies for drivers. Candidates appearing for the post of driver should possess a valid medium or heavy vehicle driving license.
The recruitment rally is being conducted by the directorate general of Assam Rifles, headquartered at Shillong.
The rally is open to all aspiring candidates in the age group of 18 to 23 years with a minimum eligibility of matriculation. However, the minimum eligibility for Scheduled Tribe candidates is to have passed Class VIII. The age relaxation for Other Backward Classes candidates is three years and for Scheduled Tribes five years.
The recruitment team will conduct a one-mile run, pull-ups on the beam with nine-foot ditch, medical examinations and written tests. Those selected will be sent to the Assam Rifles Training Centre and School at Dimapur for training before they are allotted their respective battalions on successful completion of their training programme.
The directorate has asked the candidates to bring their educational certificates along with marksheets, date of birth certificate, domicile or permanent resident certificate, caste certificate, latest character certificate and five copies of latest passport- size photograph duly attested by a gazetted officer.
