Guwahati, Nov. 19: A Bangalore-based firm has tied up with Discovery Kids to provide schoolchildren an out-of-the-box way to learn science.

After “igniting curiosity” among the students of over 80 schools in the country, ScienceAdda Learning Innovations today launched “Science Adda”, an innovative science thematic pavilion show for schools, here.

The unique model attempts to allow children to experience science through a “hands-on, minds-on” approach on the school premises. For example, a student can explore and feel a “sound wave” or visualize a 3-D wave pattern or how the waves respond to sound at the pavilions, each of which tells a story.

All this is done through assembling equipment that the firm designs after understanding the curricula of schools.

“The method of engaging a child hasn’t changed. We want to ignite curiosity for learning basic science among kids, making it more relevant to daily life,” Ravindra Krishnappa, co-founder of ScienceAdda Learning Innovations Pvt Ltd, said.

“We are passionate about bringing science experiential learning to children. The initiative allows students from Classes V-IX to explore themes such as sound, light, water and home appliances through a set of equipment that we take to and install on a school campus,” Krishnappa said.

A van takes the equipment to schools and the process of assembling or dismantling takes place in an hour. “The schools only need to schedule the show timeslots. There is no maintenance on their part as well. The sessions are of 90 minutes duration and are held four times a year in each school. The idea is to make learning science fun, simple and interesting,” he said.

Asked about the firm’s plans in the Northeast, he said, “We’ve got in touch with about 20 schools here and the plan is to spread out to other northeastern states as well.”

The firm has tied up with Guwahati-based TechOTeach, which will be its licensee partner in the Northeast.

Principals and science teachers of several private schools were invited here for a first-hand feel of the module.

Started 20 months back, Science Adda is present in Bangalore and other towns of Karnataka, New Delhi, Coimbatore and Hyderabad.

On the investment guardians have to make, he said, “We have kept a nominal fee of Rs 250 per student per session.”

ScienceAdda will also organise workshops and camps as an extension to the venture. “We follow the ‘Take Apart and Assemble’ model to explain the science behind the working of appliances, electronic gadgets and widgets,” Krishnappa said.
