Guwahati, June 5: Unseeded Sanhita Vasava of Assam caused the only upset on the second day of the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament at Chachal tennis complex here today.
Vasava shocked seventh seed Annesha Sarma, also of Assam, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in an under-14 girls’ pre-quarterfinal encounter. After a rain-induced three-hour delayed start, the other seeds had a smooth sail in the day's proceedings.
Under-14 girls’ top seed Priyana Kalita eased past Janashree Saikia 6-1, 6-0 and fourth seed Nairuti Vyas prevailed over Bhumika Gupta 6-2, 6-3 in the singles pre-quarters. Ramya N. blanked out Debangana Borkotoki 6-0, 6-0, Rudraxee Bharali beat Shreya Dutta 6-2, 6-3 and Saranya Khanna defeated Jahnavi Shivani 6-1, 6-1 in other matches of the same round.
Second seed Shubhi Dwivedi booked a semi-final berth beating Shrestha Baruah of Assam 6-1, 6-0
In under-14 boys’ pre-quarterfinals, top seed Parikshit Somani of Assam blanked out Jeet Dasgupta of West Bengal 6-0, 6-0.
second seed Arunachal Pradesh boy Mingki Talom beat Assam boy Udipta Hazarika 6-1, 6-1, third seed Ankeet Kashyap (Assam) handed a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Partha P. Bora (Assam) and fourth seed Sidharth Basnet got the better of Uddish Borpujari 6-1, 6-1.
Sidharth Choudhury, Aman Deo, Vikram Dhananjay and L.R. Balaji are the others who have also made it to the round of eight in the same age group. Choudhury beat Debashish Medhi 6-1, 6-1, Deo overcame Sadhinoor Jyoti 6-3, 6-2, Dhananjay prevailed over Ronit Bora 6-1, 6-3 and Balaji defeated Chengish Razdan Ahmed 6-3, 6-4.
In boys’ under-18, Assam siblings Abhinanshu and Arunanshu Borthakur made it to the quarter-finals. While Abhinanshu eased past Balaji 6-0, 6-2, Arunanshu tamed Jugal Baruah 6-0, 6-0 in the pre-quarters.
