Hailakandi: Dispur has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the facelift of Karimganj town in south Assam's Barak Valley under the city infrastructure development fund of Nagar Unnayan Nigam.
Karimganj municipal board vice-chairman Partha Sarathi Das said the district administration would take suggestions from prominent people on the town's beautification and development. "A committee, headed by the deputy commissioner, will finally decide the plan for the development of town," he said.
Das said the municipal board has prepared 20 proposals for development of the town, which will be discussed in a public meeting scheduled to be convened by Karimganj deputy commissioner Pradip Ranjan Talukdar.
"We are eager to beautify the town and are gathering suggestions from the public. We will convene meetings with leading citizens shortly. I hope the entire development work will be completed by next year," Talukdar said.
Das said the proposals included construction of community halls in the town's temples, underground electrification of Ramani Mohan Institute, construction of a gallery at immersion site, beautification and infrastructure work at Sambhusagar park, renovation of pavements, construction of parking areas and public toilets.
Former MLA and Assam Industrial Development Corporation chairman Mission Ranjan Das, who has also submitted proposals for development of the town, said absence of parking places was a major problem. He stressed upon the need to earmark parking zones and urged the authorities to prepare a concrete plan.
