Rs 1.64cr drugs seized, two held

Customs sleuths seized narcotic drugs valued at Rs 1.64 crore here on Friday and arrested the two persons who were carrying it.

Guwahati: Customs sleuths seized narcotic drugs valued at Rs 1.64 crore here on Friday and arrested the two persons who were carrying it.

The accused, both from Manipur's Imphal West district, were apprehended from Ganeshguri locality. They have been identified as Mala Narengbam, 52, and Mayang-lambam Arun Singh, 39. Mala hails from Nagampal area and Mayanglambam from Tokyel Khongbal. An official said the anti-smuggling unit of Guwahati customs division, based on a tip-off, intercepted the autorickshaw the two were travelling in and seized the drugs they had got from Imphal to deliver in Guwahati.

The drugs include 470gm of morphine valued at Rs 4,70,000, seven packets of heroin (85gm) valued at Rs 2,55,000 and 15,720 Metamphitamine tablets valued at Rs 1,57,20,000. The tablets are suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar through the international border in Manipur.

The source said a case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. They will be produced before a court here on Saturday.
