Guwahati, June 3: The six-member Assam team that scaled the 8,848metre Mt Everest on May 19 returned home to a warm welcome today.
Three of Assam Mountaineering Association's team - Nanda Dulal Das, David Henry Teron and Khorsing Ingty - reached the summit, while the remaining three, Manash Barooah (leader), Upen Chakraborty (deputy leader) and the team's medical officer Jagadish Basumatary got held up in the camp midway because of inclement weather. While Das and Teron are from Guwahati, Ingty is from Karbi Anglong.
Another from Sivasagar, Naba Phukan, scaled the Everest separately on May 20.
The expedition, funded by the state government, started on April 5. The trio left the base camp on May 15 and conquered the peak four days later.
With the trio scaling the highest mountain in the world, the number of Everesters in the state has risen to six and the city spared no effort to make them feel welcome.
"Scaling the mountain was no doubt my life's greatest achievement, but the kind of welcome we were given was really overwhelming. We reached Guwahati this morning and on our way from the airport, we were stopped and felicitated at several places. The love they shared is the cherry topping our achievement," Teron told the media at Swahid Bhawan, Uzan Bazar, where the All Assam Students' Union felicitated the team.
On their way from the airport in an open vehicle, the team stopped at Dispur and Bharalumukh before reaching Uzan Bazar from where they went to the Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA) at R.G. Baruah Sports Complex.
The three have been training for the expedition under the Assam government scheme to promote mountaineering, which was introduced by Tarun Saikia and Manish Kumar Deka in 2013.
