
Imphal: Retired deputy superintendent of Manipur police, Abdul Latif, 63, was arrested by the Narcotics Affairs of Border (Nab) on Friday evening in connection with drug trade.
Latif, who had also served in Nab, has been remanded in custody of Nab police for seven days for further investigation.
The retired police officer, a resident of Dewlaland Kabow Leikai, Imphal West, was arrested after Manzil Ahmed Laskar, 30, who is in police custody, named him as an accomplice in a drug racket.
Laskar was arrested after he was apprehended by 23 Assam Rifles, posted at Kaimai, Tousem, Tamenglong, on April 10 with 11.34kg of World is Yours (WY) tablets worth Rs 40 lakh.
Laskar was handed over to Nab and a case was registered against him.
During the course of the investigation, Laksar revealed that the drugs were loaded into a vehicle for transport from the residence of one Manzil Ahmed with the help of Rabul and Md Abdul Manzil.
He also said the drugs were brought to Ahmed's house by Latif from his residence.
Deputy superintendent of Nab police Th. Brinda on Saturday said, "This arrest is a breakthrough for the narcotic police as this is the first time in the history of Manipur police that a senior police officer has been arrested in a drug-related case."
"We will unearth whoever is behind the racket. Be it any influential person, Nab will bring them to book," she said.
