Shillong, May 14: One of the most decorated regiments of the Indian Army, Assam Regiment, is gearing up to celebrate its platinum jubilee.
Deputy chief of army staff Lt Gen. Subrata Saha today reviewed the attestation parade comprising 295 recruits of the 315th batch at the Assam Regimental Centre.
Raised on June 15, 1941, at Raj Bhavan here, the Assam Regiment has earned seven battle honours, three theatre honours, nine chief of army staff citations, 23 army commander citations, two UN citations and other individual awards.
In his address to the young soldiers, Gen. Saha extolled the virtues of selfless service to the nation and recounted the contributions of the Northeast and Assam Regiment towards nation-building.
Complementing the passing-out batch for their high standards, Gen. Saha encouraged the warriors from the Northeast to persevere in the pursuit of excellence.
Speaking to reporters later, he announced that the regiment's platinum jubilee celebrations would commence in Shimla on June 15. "First we will organise the celebrations in Shimla and between November 16 and 18 the celebrations will be here," he said.
He said the expanded war memorial and museum located at the Assam Regimental Centre would be inaugurated during the Shillong celebrations.
Besides these, Gen. Saha said there would be two motorcycle rallies - one from the battlefield of Chumb and the other from the battlefield of Fazilka. The rallies will converge in Shimla on June 15.
On November 16, he said there would be another motorcycle rally here where the participants would visit the Second World War battle sites.
"Assam Regiment represents all the seven states of the Northeast, and it has made tremendous contribution not only in counter-insurgency operations but also for the UN Peacekeeping Mission, providing humanitarian assistance. The young warriors are everywhere," he added.
To a query, he said, "Assam Regiment is the best, the champion regiment."
