Rawat to lead Assam in under-19 tourney

Guwahati, Oct. 24: Middle-order batsman Chandan Rawat will lead the 14-member Assam team in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy under-19 one-day cricket tournament in Calcutta from October 28.

The under-19 team today annexed a three-wicket victory over the Ranji probables at a practice match here at the NF Railway Stadium. After bundling out the seniors for 120 in 45 overs, the colts romped home in 43 overs losing seven wickets.

The Assam Cricket Association has selected top-order batsman Parvez Aziz as vice-captain of the team under last year?s Assam Ranji Trophy coach Abdul Jabbar Khan.

Assam will open their campaign against Bihar on October 28, followed by matches against Orissa on October 30, Bengal on November 1, Sikkim on November 3 and Tripura on November 4 in the group league.

Apart from the 14 members in the squad, the ACA named six players as standbys ? wicketkeeper Abdus Salam, Amit Pal, Arijit Sengupta, Pankaj Saikia, Abhijit Sinha Roy and Bichitra Baruah.

The team will leave for Calcutta on October 26.

The team was packed with exciting players like Swarupam Purkayastha, who set a national record by scoring a double century in the under-15 Polly Umrigar Trophy last season.

The selectors are also banking on Shiv Shankar Roy, Abu Naschim Ahmed, Bhask-ar Jyoti Barman, Sadek Imran Choudhury and Gyan Praka-sh to deliver the goods.

Assam were eliminated in the East Zone league phase in the last edition of the meet.

The team was picked up from among 26 players who passed the recent age-verification tests conducted by an eight-member medical panel at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
