Guwahati: All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Assam, Harish Rawat, arrived here on Thursday on a three-day stock-taking visit to the state.

"He is here to take stock of preparations for the upcoming panchayat and general elections. Party president Rahul Gandhi has instructed everyone to strengthen the organisational structure. In Assam, we will do it under Rawat's supervision. He will hold a series of meetings to familiarise himself with the state unit," senior Congress leader Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya told The Telegraph. Party insiders said Rawat would also gear up the party for Guwahati Municipal Corporation election.

Rawat, former chief minister of Uttarakhand, assumed charge last week, replacing C.P. Joshi.

"I will come to Assam again in 15 days and visit every nook and corner of the state and meet party workers and the people," he said.

He expressed confidence that the party would win about 11 seats in Assam in next year's Lok Sabha polls. In 2014, the Congress had won only three of the 14 seats.

Party sources said Rawat landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 2pm and was welcomed by PCC president Ripun Bora, leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and other senior party workers. Subsequently, he held meetings with senior party leaders, MLAs, MPs and delegates of All India Trade Union Congress.

On Friday morning, he will visit Kamakhya temple. During the day, he will meet all party leaders, former and sitting MPs and MLAs and district and block presidents at Manabendra Sarma complex in Dispur here. He will meet leaders of the Assam chapter of National Students' Union of India, the student wing of the Congress, Congress OBC Front and Congress Seva Dal in the evening.
