Agartala, July 7: Ratan Tata will be in Tripura for a day on Thursday in response to an invitation from chief minister Manik Sarkar. He will be accompanied by a team of executives of the Tata Group.

He will arrive in a chartered flight and hold meetings with senior officials of the state government besides calling on the chief minister.

A high-level team of the Indian Chamber of Commerce is also scheduled to visit Tripura on the same day to explore possibilities of investment in the state. A meeting among Ratan Tata, his executives and the Indian Chamber of Commerce delegates is also on the card.

Official sources here said Sarkar had invited Ratan Tata, former chairman of the Tata Group, to visit the state and include it in the ambit of the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) network.

"The Tatas have a trust which looks after the conglomerate's CSR scheme. They work on education, health and upgrade of rural livelihood. Tripura may also be included in the ambit of the Tata's CSR scheme," said a senior official of the state government.

He said Ratan Tata's visit might also be linked with his keenness to study the possibilities and business potential in Tripura, which is all set to emerge as the gateway to the Northeast from Bangladesh.

"Ratan Tata had accompanied former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Bangladesh in 2012. Though he retired as the chairman of Tata Group in December 2012, he is still keen to study business potential for the group, specially in sectors where Tripura's abundant reserve of natural gas can be utilised as the main raw material," said the official.

Apart from this, Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is scheduled to visit Tripura on July 11 to oversee the progress of work initiated on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Digital India programme.

Prasad is also expected to hold discussions with senior BSNL officials of the Northeast on the state of the service here. "The question of securing Internet connectivity through cable from Chittagong port of Bangladesh and the rate of progress in the work will also be discussed in the meeting in Agartala," a senior BSNL official said.
