Guwahati, Sept. 14: Prithiviraj Narayan Dev Mech was 'coronated' as the Bodo prince with much fanfare in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district in March last year. Today, he finds himself embroiled in an alleged case of impersonation and cheating.

Prithiviraj, 20, the 19th descendent of Bodo king Chikra Mech, is accused of sending 'threats' to himself so that he may be given a personal security officer.

Police sources said Prithviraj had lodged an FIR with Kokrajhar police station on August 8 following text messages from a person, who identified himself as B. Mithinga of the militant NDFB (S), the previous day. On August 11, he claimed to have got a threat call from the same phone number. Subsequently, he was provided with a personal security officer (PSO) and the police launched an investigation.

The police claimed that the probe had revealed that Prithviraj himself sent the threat messages to his mobile phone from a lost mobile phone belonging to a driver in Kokrajhar town, purportedly to get a PSO.

An FIR lodged by Kokrajhar police station sub-inspector Narayan Boro said, 'During investigation and from statements of witnesses, it is found that Rajkumar Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech cheated the policehe state by sending threatening message to his own phone number in order to get PSO or police personnel for his security.'

The police registered a suo motu case (539/2017) at Kokrajhar police station on September 4 under sections 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC, which carry punishment of three and seven years of imprisonment respectively along with a fine.

Subsequently, the PSO provided to Prithviraj was withdrawn.

BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, whom Prithviraj is close to, had also written to director-general of police Mukesh Sahay on July 29, after Prithviraj expressed fears that 'some miscreants' might target him because of his closeness with the BTC chief and his party, the Bodoland People's Front, an ally of the BJP-led state government. Mohilary, a former militant leader (BLTF), had joined politics after signing the Bodo Accord in 2003. However, the militant NDFB refused to be a part of the accord and continued its armed movement. The NDFB (P) and NDFB (R), are, however, in ceasefire.

King Chikra Mech used to head the Sidli royal state (now in BTAD, which is governed by the BTC). As his descendant, Prithiviraj was anointed the prince at a colourful function in at Ramfalbeel which was attended by thousands and earned 'spontaneous respect' from many in Bodo society.

The police said Prithviraj was evading arrest.

When The Telegraph spoke to him today, Prithviraj denied the allegations, saying the law would take its own course. He refused to comment further.
