Guwahati, July 25: The recovery of a bomb belonging to the World War II era has put Assam police in a dilemma as the cops are still undecided as to what to do with the “dangerous” vintage object.
The 100kg bomb is currently buried “safely” on the Misamari police station premises.
“We are still undecided as to what to do with the bomb. We have contacted experts from the army but they have not come as yet,” a police official at Misamari said.
The bomb, which was in possession of NDFB militants, was recovered by the police from Kamenbari area along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border a few days back on basis of specific information.
Sonitpur superintendent of police Jitmol Doley said the bomb was too heavy to be shifted to another location and was therefore being kept at the police station temporarily.
“It was a Herculean task to shift the bomb to the police station from the site where it was recovered since the area was inaccessible. We have still not decided what to do with the object,” he said.
Doley, however, said the bomb looks harmless as it was lying in such a state for several decades.
The police had claimed that NDFB militants had found it inside the jungles of Arunachal Pradesh and tried to open it to use the explosives inside to make bombs but failed to do so.
“They shifted the bomb to the location from where it was recovered,” Doley said.
Wreckage of aircraft belonging to the World War II era have been recovered from the hills of Arunachal Pradesh over the years.
Reports say many planes and pilots went missing in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh during the war.
Doley said the bomb would finally be handed over to the explosive experts of the army. “They will do the needful,” he said.
