Shillong, Oct. 4: A proposal to name a road after St Teresa of Calcutta was today placed before the Meghalaya government by a member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

P.T. Sawkmie, who represents Mawlai constituency and is the deputy chief executive member of KHADC, led a delegation of Mawlai Constituency Progressive Forum to meet general administration department minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh at the secretariat here.

He requested the government to name the road from Mawlai Mawroh-Umshing Mawkynroh till Madan Mawkhar under Mawlai constituency after Mother Teresa as a tribute to the Catholic missionary who dedicated her life to serving the poor and needy.

Mawlai houses some important institutions like the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures or Don Bosco Museum, a research and publication centre for promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Northeast, and the North Eastern Hill University (Nehu).

Saying that roads in the state have been also named after great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, U Tirot Sing Syiem and U Soso Tham, the forum told the government that naming a road would be "appropriate to honour St (Mother) Teresa and appreciate her selfless service rendered to the people of the state and the country." It said this way her name would be remembered forever.

Sawkmie said the minister had told them that the proposal would be placed before a screening committee of the general administration department. He said he had also discussed the matter with the Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese, Rev. Dominic Jala.
