Borjhar, Sept. 9: A major fire which broke out last night gutted Swagat Plastics Pvt. Ltd, a plastic products manufacturing unit, at Jaiguru (north Guwahati) in Kamrup district.

Property worth Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore turned into ashes, a source said. No one was, however, injured. Sources told this correspondent that the fire broke out at 11.30 last night and continued for nearly 12 hours. Fire tenders from North Guwahati Fire Service, Panbazar, Dispur, Hajo, Sualkuchi, Baihata Chariali, Rangia and Guwahati Refinery were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

The flames were visible from far and dense smoke engulfed the entire area.

The fire-fighters battled the blaze for nearly 12 hours.

Chemicals stocked inside the factory and plastic raw materials fed the blaze.

Sources said the fire was finally brought under control when a fire-tender sent from Guwahati Refinery was pressed into service and used foam at 11.30am today.

Foam tenders are used when a fire burns plastic goods, a fire department official said. He said foam deprives burning liquid of oxygen.
