Shillong, Jan. 11: Meghalaya PCC president Friday Lyngdoh said there was no question of “changing” chief minister Mukul Sangma, with dissident Congress legislators making a move to shuffle the leadership in the Congress to pave the way for former chief minister D.D. Lapang to take over the reins of power.
The dissidents, who claim to have the support of 19 of the 28 Congress members, said the change is imminent, as the legislators and the AICC are not happy with the style and functioning of the chief minister.
Though there is bickering among the legislators, the party president wanted unity among them.
“Mukul will complete the remaining term and the question of change of leadership does not arise,” Lyngdoh said.
The PCC president said during the recent meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, a unanimous decision was that the legislators would be united under the leadership of Mukul Sangma.
The PCC had a meeting today to discuss the ethnic clashes on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The meeting, however, did not discuss anything related to the change of leadership.
A party functionary said the party was more worried about ethnic clashes along the border than effecting a change of leadership.
According to Lyngdoh, the party’s interest of unity should come first rather than the personal interests of the legislators who were demanding a change of leadership every now and then.
“No one should be after power, position and wealth and what is required now is unity among the legislators,” he said.
Lyngdoh also asserted that the party would not tolerate indiscipline.
It was in April last year that Mukul Sangma, who was deputy chief minister under the Lapang ministry, ousted him from power with the help of dissidents.
However, a Congress dissident alleged that many are not happy with the style and functioning of the current chief minister who takes major decisions without proper consultation with his colleagues.
Some dissidents also said that there was no need for Mukul Sangma to rush to Delhi “when Garo hills was burning”.
The Opposition NCP has also criticised the chief minister by saying that during the ethnic clashes, Sangma, who should have been in station, had rushed to Delhi “for no reason”.
Though Mukul Sangma wanted to meet the Prime Minister, Union home minister and defence minister besides other AICC leaders in Delhi, he could not get an audience with them.
