Guwahati: Gauhati High Court on Monday refused to extend the interim bail granted to Pallavi Sharma - an Assam Police Service officer and daughter of BJP parliamentarian from Tezpur R.P. Sharma - and directed her to surrender before the trial court on August 24.
Pallavi, who was arrested by Dibrugarh police on July 18 for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-jobs scam for allegedly securing her job through illegal means, was granted interim bail on August 1 by the high court for 15 days to visit her ailing father in Calcutta.
Her father underwent kidney transplantation at NH Rabindranath Tagore International Hospital in Calcutta on July 30.
She, however, had filed an application in the high court seeking extension of the period of her interim bail stating that her father is still critical and requires her care and attention as she is an only child.
While hearing her plea for extension of the interim bail period, the high court, on August 14, had asked police to produce a status report on the health condition of her father.
On Monday, the police submitted the status report, prepared by the hospital authorities, which says her father is "progressing well" and his clinical condition is currently stable, but he is still in the hospital for monitoring and observation.
"Having considered the report of the doctor, I am of the view that there is no need for further extension of the interim bail. Accordingly, the accused is directed to surrender before the trial court on August 24," said Justice Mir Alfaz Ali in the order passed on Monday.
On August 14, Pallavi had not been able to submit any medical report or any other material along with her petition for extension of her interim bail period and her lawyer had told the court that the hospital authorities were reluctant to furnish any document regarding treatment of her father.
After that, the court asked the police to get the status report from the hospital.
