Dhemaji/Guwahati, Sept. 29: A pall of gloom hung thick over the house of Uma Kanta Pegu, 82, and his wife, Bhanumati, 80, at Tantari village in Dhemaji district today, as the elderly couple waited for the arrival of their granddaughter's body from New Delhi.

Kaayum Pegu, 20, a BA second-year student of Miranda House college in New Delhi, was seriously injured in the wee hours of September 23 when the Uber cab in which she and three of her friends were travelling in rammed into a parked truck in Greater Noida. She died yesterday morning. Sources said the driver received minor injuries and fled the spot.

"It is a painful moment for us to see our granddaughter pass away while we are still surviving in this old age," said Uma Kanta. The victim's uncle arrived with the body at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati around 9am. The girl's parents, Ghana Kanta and Dulumoni, arrived by a different flight as they didn't get tickets in the flight carrying the body. They then started for Tantari village where the last rites will be performed.

Ghana Kanta, an inspector in the state transport department, and his wife had rushed to New Delhi after they came to know about the accident.

"Kaayum's parents reached Guwahati along with her body around 9am and set out for their native village in Dhemaji at 11am. We are all heartbroken by her early passing," said a relative.
