Tinsukia: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) has alleged that some loyalists of the BJP MLA here, Sanjay Kishan, threatened a youth Congress leader over a Facebook post, a day after the Tinsukia College Students Union results were declared.
The youth had allegedly accused Kishan of persuading an NSUI-backed winning candidate to work for the BJP.
NSUI national secretary Mousam Baruah told reporters on Wednesday: "The MLA is claiming that seven of the winning candidates are backed by the ABVP, when actually a majority of the winners are supported by the NSUI."
"Kishan also went to the house of Shyam Harpal, who won the general secretary's post with NSUI's backing, and tried to persuade him to work for the BJP," alleged Baruah. "When a Youth Congress leader, Munna Ahmed, made this public on Facebook, more than 50 goons of the MLA went to his house on Tuesday and threatened him."
Both Harpal and Kishan are from the tea tribe community. "We have informed Makum police," Baruah added. He warned Kishan to stay away from college affairs.
Rubbishing the allegations as baseless, Kishan told The Telegraph that he couldn't even think of asking a student to join politics. "I met Shyam, whom I was acquainted with since he was a member of the All Tea Tribes Students Association, at a Puja pandal. He told me that he was interested to join the ABVP. I said the BJP does not get involved in such matters."
"I wished him luck after being a representative of the people of Tinsukia," he said.
"It is unfortunate that the Congress is trying to politicise the matter through its students' wing," he added.
