70 rebels surrender in Assam

Seventy militants, including 47 from Ulfa, surrendered with arms before GOC, 4 Corps, Lt Gen. A.S. Jamwal, at Chariduar in Tezpur, a day after a series of blasts rocked Assam, claiming five lives and injuring 103 others. esides the Ulfa militants, 11 from NDFB, eight from Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Asom and four rebels from Bengal Tiger Force laid down their arms.

Tight security

The Assam government has beefed up security in all Garo hills districts, especially in areas bordering Goalpara district, following the bomb blast near the Tura-Paikan Road on Thursday.

Bamboo meet

Representatives of plywood companies and bamboo experts participated in a meet on revival of mills using bamboo in Guwahati on Friday. Assam governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh urged people take up bamboo as an enterprise.

KSU stand

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has strongly opposed the demand for a greater Garoland comprising areas of West Khasi and Ribhoi district by the Achik National Volunteers’ Council (ANVC).

Blast protest

The Assam College Teacher’s Association has called for a statewide rally on September 4 to protest against the killing of 13 persons on Independence Day in Dhemaji.

Woman injured

A woman was seriously injured when her husband hacked her with a machete at Rüsoma village near Kohima. The incident took place on Friday after the woman had an argument with her husband.

Recruitment

The All India Radio and Doordarshan Technical Employees’ Association, Northeast zone, have requested the chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati for a special recruitment drive for the Northeast zone from domicile candidates.

Dhubri review

Meetings were convened by the Dhubri district administration on Friday to instil confidence among the citizens in view of the prevailing law and order. Police officials of the district reviewed the situation.
