Call for harmony
The annual general meeting of Old Boys Association of Sainik School, Goalpara, was held in Guwahati on February 14.
At the meeting, Anwar Hussain Saikia and Diganta Gogoi, the president and general secretary of the association respectively, urged every student, past and present, to take part in the socio-economic development of the region and maintain communal harmony for a better tomorrow. The meet asked the students to contribute towards a better ecology, environment and society as a whole.
It also submitted a memorandum to chief minister Tarun Gogoi, highlighting the need for a permanent institute to train students to get into the armed forces and develop the infrastructure of the school.
The agenda in the memorandum included revision of the work done like the training and preparing of student for Staff Selection Board (SSB) interview to join the National Defence Academy (NDA), blood donation camps, helping needy ex-students of the school (ex-SSGian) and creating mass awareness against terrorism.
A souvenir — Nostalgia ’09 — was released to boost the morale of the ex-SSGians. Over 1,000 members attended the meeting and the cultural get-together in the evening.
Sainik School, Goalpara, was established in the year 1964 as the first residential school in the Northeast, providing public school facilities to the meritorious students of the region. The primary objective of the school is to give secondary education with a view to send them to defence forces of the country through the National Defence Academy and other institutions.

Annual sports
Altogether 267 students from Classes I, II, III and IV participated in the various sports events and competitions. Among the 60 winners, Ankita Saha, Anandini Sarma and Debojit Ghose clinched four, three and three prizes respectively.
Presiding over the prize distribution function, Dhubri civil sub-divisional officer Prasanna Ranjan Gharphalia hoped that the school management committee, teachers and parents would continue to encourage the students for their all-round development.
Chit chat
Psychologists have called for the need to focus on the unity of mankind striving for a higher consciousness at a seminar on “Spirituality and mental health” held at the department of Psychology, Gauhati University recently.
Speakers said the need of the hour is not to focus on the differences but on the unity, which exists in the human race. They said that goodness is inherent in man and put forward views on how an individual, if not thwarted by adverse situations, strives to fulfil potentialities within him where he enjoys the world as it is and without a judgmental stance.
