Shillong, March 20: The uncertainty over whether incumbent NCP legislator from Rangsakona, Adolf Lu Hitler R. Marak, will be getting a party ticket to contest the upcoming polls, is now over.

Elections to the Meghalaya Assembly are slated for February-March next year.

The party leadership today announced that Adolf Marak, who is still under suspension, is no longer a part of the party. Sitting member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Dipul R. Marak will be fielded from Rangsakona in West Garo Hills.

After announcing the first list of 14 candidates on Saturday, the party today declared the names of another five candidates who would be fielded in the 2013 elections.

Making the announcement here, NCP state election committee convener and Opposition leader, Conrad K. Sangma, said: “He (Adolf Marak) is still under suspension and is no longer a part of the party”.

Adolf Marak will be contesting as the Congress nominee from Bajengdoba against NCP’s John Manner Marak, sources said. The Congress will field Zenith M. Sangma, former legislator and younger brother of chief minister Mukul Sangma from Rangsakona.

The other candidates include GHADC member Boston K. Marak from Salmanpara in West Garo Hills, Ringnon Marak from Raksamgre in West Garo Hills, D.P. Iangjuh, a former minister, from Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills and S. Sohtun from Jirang in Ri Bhoi.

The five candidates were approved by the party high command in New Delhi yesterday, Conrad said.

Stating that Meghalaya would not see an Uttar Pradesh situation where the father made way for the son to occupy the chief minister’s office,

Conrad declared that whether or not NCP general secretary Purno Agitok Sangma contests the polls, the former Lok Sabha Speaker would be the chief minister if the party was voted to power.

“Purno Agitok Sangma is the leader and he would be the chief minister if the NCP is voted to power,” Conrad clarified when asked whether an Akhilesh Yadav-like situation would arise in Meghalaya.

The senior Sangma is yet to decide whether he would contest the upcoming polls.
