Nine schools to vie for title

Imphal, Dec. 14: Nine schools from the country are participating in the 60th National School Games 2014 in Thang-Ta Under-17 and Under-19 years for boys and girls’ events that was formally opened at Khuman Lampak indoor stadium today.

PHED minister and Manipur Olympic Association president I. Hemochandra Singh, along with Thang-Ta Federation of India president H. Premkumar Singh and youth affairs and sports department officials, graced the opening function. The thang-ta bouts will begin tomorrow.

Altogether 160 players from Delhi, Assam, Punjab, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Vidya Bharati, Jammu and Kashmir and Tripura will participate.

The PHED minister said the introduction of thang-ta will popularise the sport and provide a needed platform to bring the younger generation closer. National gold medallist W. Lanchenba took the oath on behalf of all the states.

NSA selection: The National Sports Academy, Imphal, will hold a preliminary selection test in six disciplines on December 19 and 20 at Khuman Lampak for enrolment to its academic session 2015-16. The disciplines are archery, boxing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling and weightlifting.

Churchand soccer: The final round of the 58th Sir Churchand Singh KCSI, CBE Memorial Football Tournament 2014, sponsored by the Manipur Development Society, will begin from December 17 at Mapal Kangjeibung.

Altogether 31 teams will vie for the champion’s title.

National volleyball: The All-Manipur Volleyball Association has selected 12 girls players to participate in the 37th Sub-Junior NationalVolleyball Championship (boys and girls) 2014 to be held in New Delhi from December 26-31. The players are Th. Sanhalbi, Ch. Puspa, Ch. Roshni, I. Langlen, Rk. Thoi, K. Thoibi, Th. Bijaya, Ch. Indurani, Th. Manju, K. Anjali, L. Malemnganbi and Th. Romi Devi.

Pritijini Waikhom is on the reserve list.
