Guwahati, Aug. 22: Sunrise Athletic Club held NF Railway Sports Club 1-1 in a first leg match of the Guwahati Sports Association RG Baruah Super Division Football League at Nehru Stadium here today.
NFR started well with a flurry of attacks, but Sunrise too created some opportunities.
The fleet-footed Jilendra Brahma looked good and nearly opened the account for NFR in the 20th minute but for some good defending from Bikram Haldar.
A couple of minutes later, Sunrise’s Vikram Singh wasted a chance and struck one above the bar after goalkeeper Bijoy Sonowal was caught off guard.
But the NFR defenders raised their game and a couple of moves by Sunrise were thwarted.
In the 40th minute, the agile Jilendra made a dash from the half-line but a Sunrise defender blocked his shot at the goal just in time.
However, minutes later, Duleswar Rabha made a mess of an open chance as Sunrise goalkeeper Manish T. Chhetry showed some good reflexes.
In the second half, Sunrise upped the ante as Vikram Singh struck one straight to the goalkeeper in the 53rd minute.
Four minutes later, medio Edoho Gilbert missed a sitter in a goalmouth melee while compatriot Babulal Hasda’s shot from an acute angle hit the side bar.
In the 59th minute, NFR earned a free kick from outside the danger box after a foul on Jilendra. Playmaker Prasanta Bhorali for once was a tad inaccurate, as he shot one way over the bar.
The offensive by the railmen paid off in the 63rd minute, as Dipak Ghatowar made no mistake of a Prasanta pass to see the ball trickle over the goal line.
Buoyant after the goal, the railmen piled on the pressure as Kapil Daimary and Jilendra nearly brought about their second goal.
In the 75th minute, Dipak wasted a straight chance.
In the 83rd minute, luck smiled on Sunrise as Vikram Singh connected a pass from substitute Amal Das to perfection for the equaliser.
