National wushu camp begins

Thirty wushu players are currently undergoing training in the senior national coaching camp at SAI NERC, Imphal, preparing for the three international meets, including the 13th World Wushu Championship, 2015, to be held in Jakarta.

Imphal, July 3: Thirty wushu players are currently undergoing training in the senior national coaching camp at SAI NERC, Imphal, preparing for the three international meets, including the 13th World Wushu Championship, 2015, to be held in Jakarta.

The Wushu Association of India has selected 30 players based on trials held at SAI, Takyelpat, under the watchful eyes of WAI general secretary Suhel Ahmed and other SAI officials.

The selected players for sanshou events are Pooja Tomar, Y. Sanathoi Devi, K. Arunpama Devi, Pooja Kadian, Praveen Kumar, Kh. Rohit, Uchit Sharma, Manoj Kumar, L. Buddhachandra, Ravi Panchal, Bhanu Pratap, Parmod Kataria, L. Neta Singh, Mukhesh Chaudhary, H. Gagrain Singh, Rajani Deori, Rajinder Singh Meena, O. Joy, Kuldeep, Rajinder Singh, Balwant Singh and Sumit Phogat.

In the Taolu events, L. Sanatombi Chanu, Y. Sapana Devi, M. Gyandash, Anjul Namdeo, K. Malemnganba Meitei, Chirag Sharma, M. Punshiva Meitei and Aditya Kumar will be participating. Seven players are from the state. Five coaches and two physiotherapists have also been named to assist the players during the camp.

Secretary general, Wushu Association of India, Suhel Ahmed, told the Telegraph, that Imphal was chosen as the location for the first phase of preparation as the state has produced many champions for the country in this sport.

"We have held the first phase here as a salute to the state which has produced so many Arjuna awardees and champions. We hope the spirit of the wushu players will be boosted in such a beautiful sporting atmosphere. I hope this camp will benefit them and uplift their mood, increasing the medal prospects," he said. This is the second national camp in the city after a gap of eight years. Apart from the Jakarta meet, the national camp is also for the forthcoming fifth Pars Cup in Iran and 12th South Asian Games in Meghalaya.

SAI NERC director Francis Marwin and Sanbhu Seth, chairman, judge and referee board, also attended the inaugural of the camp today.
